Description

The course will be held on the Sabrina 5 boat which is moored at The National Waterways Museum in Gloucester Docks.  The day starts at 10.00 with coffee and runs until 4.30pm. Lunch, tea and coffee will be provided, as well as wool!

You can choose what animal you would like to make (within reason!), but it is best to pick something you love and you are familiar with how it looks.  We use a wire armature frame and make a model around 6 to 7 inches in height.  Please bring reference pictures/photos that inspire you and especially a picture of the animal from the side view, so that we can get the proportions right - I will help you with this, don't worry about it!  I will also have some photographs and books for reference.  Please let me know what animal you would like to make so I can bring the right colour wool!

You will learn the process of needle-felting and hopefully you will finish your sculpture in the day, but there is no pressure to do so and I will ensure that you will be able to finish off at home if necessary.  Felting is an enjoyable and surprisingly easy craft.

All materials and tools are provided.  So you don't need to bring anything but enthusiasm! Felting tools and wool will also be available to purchase after the course if you so wish.

Access:  Sabrina V is fully wheelchair friendly, both manual and electric. There is a disabled toilet on board with a wheelchair lift.

Parking:  The Museum does not have its own car park.  A short walk away are Southgate Street (Mon-Sat £6.00 Sun £2.20) or the Quays shopping centre (£12.00).  [Prices as at Jan 2023]

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is needlefelting?

Although it has its roots in a centuries old form of cloth making, needle-felting is a relatively new art, an off-shoot of industrial felt-making from the nineteenth century.  Woollen fibres are bonded together using specially designed barbed needles to form a firm material which can be made into 3-D shapes.

  • Do I have to be good at sewing?

No sewing (or glueing) involved.  You will be amazed how the fibres bond together with just a little stabbing.

  • Do I have to be artistic?

No!  We use a wire armature frame in the models which immediately helps you with proportions.  You will be gently guided through the entire process.  Relax and enjoy - you only have yourself to please.

  • Do I need to bring anything with me?

All materials are included and tools loaned to you.  It is important however, to bring a printed picture of the animal you would like to make.
